Lionel Messi Records 700th Goal

Lionel Messi scored his 700th career goal on Tuesday against Atletico Madrid — and he did it in style. The second-place Catalan club met the third-place capital club at the Camp Nou. Messi was able to put his team ahead 2-1 early in the second half after Felipe brought down Nelson Semedo in the box for a penalty kick to reach the mark, though Barca couldn’t hang on to the victory, settling for a 2-2 draw.

Messi, who hit the post in the first half with a gorgeous curling shot, made no mistake from the spot, going with a Panenka-style chip, sending Jan Oblak the wrong way. Take a look:

That’s one way to score your 700th. It wasn’t a forgettable tap-in from close but rather a cheeky chip that plenty will remember and one Oblak will want to forget. Messi also helped set up the opener with a curling corner kick that resulted in a Diego Costa own goal.

Messi’s 700 total goals make him the active player with the second-most goals trailing Cristiano Ronaldo’s 727. Ronaldo reached the mark in 1,004 games while Messi has played in 862 matches.¬†

When factoring in total goals from youth national teams and club reserve teams, Messi is the seventh best scorer in history. Here are those ahead of Messi.

  1. Josef Biscan (1931-56), 805 goals
  2. Romario (1985-2009), 772 goals
  3. Pele (1956-77), 767 goals
  4. Ferenc Puskas (1943-66), 746 goals
  5. Ronaldo (2001-present), 745 goals
  6. Gerd Muller (1962-81), 735 goals
  7. Messi (2003-present), 726 goals

For those counting, that was his 630th professional goal for Barca, and he’s got 70 more for the Argentina national team. Atletico is the team with the second-most conceded goals to Messi with 32, trailing Sevilla’s 37. Messi has actually scored more than 20 career goals against 11 Spanish clubs. The non-Spanish club to concede the most is Arsenal with nine.

The remaining goals from the list above are five with Barcelona C, six with Barcelona B, two with the Argentina U-23 team and 14 with the Argentina U-20 team.

It will be interesting if, at the age of 33, he can approach 800 career goals.
